Murtaya Self Build
Murtaya Kit Car - Self Assembly Murtaya PDF Print E-mail

(Price list, Murtaya kit variants and donor Impreza parts required are listed at bottom of page).

The Murtaya has been carefully designed to offer an exciting and straightforward project for home assembly. The donor parts required are sourced from a single donor vehicle, the classic shape (1993-2000) Subaru Impreza in either normally aspirated or turbocharged form. Later generation Impreza can be used with some modification – call or email for further details.

Suitable donor vehicles are readily available, particularly due to the high number of ‘grey’ import cars that have been brought into the UK from Japan. These cars, especially the WRX and STI models, make for superb donors as the standard specification makes for an incredibly exciting package when built up with one of our kits giving simply blistering performance and fantastic traction and road holding.

Complete donor cars are available from £500 with imported WRX and STI’s in roadworthy condition from £1500-2500. Buying a car in good road worthy condition within this price range is highly recommended, as it allows you to try the car to ensure that everything works as Subaru intended, and, selling the parts that you do not require will recoup part of the original vehicles purchase price.

For the ultimate in performance donor vehicles, an Impreza STI Type R or STI Type RA should be sought. Although rarer and more expensive, the list of competition homologation special components fitted as standard to these models create an incredible package that will build into a sensational Murtaya.

The build itself is illustrated in the supplied manual, which includes an overview of the assembly process and many photographs to illustrate various stages of construction.  The main monocoque is provided pre-drilled, with all of the major suspension and drivetrain mounting points clearly defined; this ensures that the basic geometry of your vehicle will be correct, simply leaving detailed suspension alignment to be completed at the end of the build.

The Murtaya’s careful design ensures that a majority of the donor Impreza parts are used in unmodified form, with the parts that do need adjustment being modified on an exchange basis at the factory. This means that the mechanical build is largely a simple case of removing the parts from the donor, reconditioning as you see fit, then bolting them into your new car. It is realistically possible to get to a rolling chassis situation in a single day, which is hugely satisfying and provides great motivation to tackle some of the more time-consuming jobs such as trimming the interior.

Undoubtedly, the most intimidating aspect of the build for most home builders will be the wiring loom, as there is a lot of it! However, with some time and simple precautions this really should hold no fears. The loom is well designed and features many simple connectors; these blocks will only fit together with the appropriate other half, so it eases the installation process greatly. Take plenty of time when stripping down the donor car; label the block connectors and associated parts carefully as you separate them - the re-assembly should then be straightforward.

The kits are offered in either modular stages or a comprehensive format to suit the individual builder. The modular packages will allow those who are short of either budget or space to complete their vehicle as money or room become available, whilst the comprehensive package gives all that is required (other than the donor components) to finish the build. Please feel free to ring us to discuss your individual circumstances and we can advise on the best route to follow.

Kit delivery time is approximately six to eight weeks from the receipt of a completed order form with the appropriate paid deposit. The final balance is required upon collection/delivery of the kit.

With all self build owners, advice is only a phone call or email away. We believe that the process of building your Murtaya should be enjoyable, so if you are stuck or frustrated at any time, we will be only too happy to offer our advice and (hopefully!) wisdom, accumulated through grazing our own knuckles while building Murtaya of many different specifications.

As you draw towards the end of your build we will be happy to carry out a free and comprehensive pre IVA inspection at our factory. We will identify any areas where we believe there may be issues and advise on the best course of action to rectify any problems. Hopefully, if you have taken your time and followed the manual there should be little to find, and a free pre test inspection ought to ensure a stress free day at the IVA centre, and of course hitting the road soon after!

Many Murtaya, both amateur and professional built, have successfully passed IVA at the first presentation and with a thorough and methodical approach, yours should be no different.

Make no mistake: there are few things as satisfying as driving a vehicle that you have built, soaking up the admiration and appreciation of onlookers as you power by, enjoying the reward for the hours spent tinkering and fettling with your creation.
